Anyone seeking a diverse yet comfortable trip to Zimbabwe will find it here. The tour focuses on the KA-ZA conservancy areas of Hwange, Matusadona, and Victoria Falls, as well as a visit to Mana Pools National Park. A highlight is the four-day houseboat cruise on Lake Kariba. The boat is very comfortably equipped, with cabins featuring private bathrooms. Tenders are available for excursions. In the national parks, we stay in stylish lodges and tented camps. Meals and local drinks are included. We enjoy wildlife viewing by open safari vehicles, boat, and on foot. For the longer distances from Harare to Mana Pools and from Kariba to Hwange National Park, we use charter flights.
KA-ZA Information
The Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KA-ZA TFCA), covering 520,000 km², is the largest contiguous conservation area in the world. Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe participate in this transboundary project. By combining a total of 36 national parks, nature reserves, and conservation areas, the project aims to promote the sustainable development of tourism and the economy, as well as the preservation of biodiversity. Among the best-known protected areas of the TFCA are: Chobe National Park, Makgadikgadi Pans, and the Okavango Delta in Botswana; Kafue and Sioma Ngwezi National Parks in Zambia; Hwange and Victoria Falls National Parks in Zimbabwe; Bwabwata and Khaudum National Parks in Namibia; and Luengue Luiana and Mavinga National Parks in Angola.
1-3 Mana Pools National Park
After arriving in Harare, you will fly directly to Mana Pools National Park in the afternoon. Flight time approx. 1 hour.
The virtually untouched wilderness along the Zambezi River is a fantastic introduction and the first highlight of this trip. We will spend three varied days on game drives and walking safaris, accompanied by experienced rangers. Our safari lodge is located right on the riverbank, with chalets nestled in the shade of large trees and offering magnificent views of the Zambezi. The perspective from the water is unparalleled. Elephants come to the river to drink and bathe – and occasionally even visit the lodge. Hippos laze in the water, and crocodiles bask on the sandbanks. A motorboat will take us on the mighty Zambezi from the lodge to Chirundu, from where we will continue by vehicle to Lake Kariba.
3 nights in a 3-4-star lodge (B/P/D)
4-7 Houseboat Trip on Lake Kariba
After a final river safari, our motorboat takes us back to Chirundu (approx. 1.5 hours). Just over an hour later, we reach Kariba, on the shores of the reservoir. We visit the spectacular dam and, if possible, the Kariba Animal Welfare Trust, where living in harmony with wildlife is paramount.
1 night in a 3-4-star lodge (B/P/D)
The following morning, we settle into our comfortable cabins on the houseboat, each with a private shower/toilet and large windows. There are several decks and a lounge with a tastefully furnished restaurant area. Our first stop is Matusadona National Park, which, after the damming of the Zambezi River with the help of the world's largest animal rescue operation, "Operation Noah," became a habitat for numerous animals. We reach the shore by dinghy, where we embark on a walking safari (approx. 2-3 hours). The houseboat trip is varied and tranquil; we enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the fishermen on the lake, and those who wish can even try their hand at fishing. We use the dinghies for all excursions. Breathtaking sunsets against the backdrop of tree skeletons rising from the water, combined with the fascinating silhouettes of the animals, offer unique photo opportunities.
3 nights in cabins (B/P/D)
8-10 Hwange National Park
After three days and nights in seclusion, we arrive back in Kariba. The drive takes approximately one hour. From here, we fly to Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe's largest wildlife reserve. Besides over 100 mammal species and more than 400 bird species, Hwange is famous for its enormous elephant herds; more than 30,000 of these gray giants roam the park. Game drives, wildlife viewing, and a walking safari fill our days. We'll be on the lookout for wild dogs, which have found a protected home in Hwange National Park. There will also be time to visit local conservation projects, such as the Painted Dog Conservation Center and the Soft Foot Alliance. These projects educate local communities on how they can benefit from wildlife conservation. We'll stay in a tented camp in a wildlife-rich area on the edge of the park.
3 nights in a 3-4* tented camp (B/P/D)
11-12 Victoria Falls
Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders) awaits us. The waterfalls stretch across a width of 2 kilometers. Besides visiting the falls, there are numerous optional excursions: sundowner boat trips on the Zambezi, scenic flights, and much more. A visit to the Anti-Poaching Unit, a project dedicated to wildlife conservation and combating poaching, is also planned. Travel time approx. 3 hours.
